Earth

The first place that is represented in the movie is well known: earth. 

In this film last sources of food on earth have been devastated by blight (a plague) and making it uninhabitable. 
This is why they were looking for a plan that could save human kind: a new planet to colonize.
It is safe to speculate that earth did not in fact recover and essentially died.
