Montmartre (also known as "La Butte"—the mound) is a hill located in Paris's 18th arrondissement. Montmartre served as a site of military significance throughout history as the hill provided a strategic location for artillery bombardment of Paris. During the nineteenth century, Montmartre was inhabited by many prominent artists and composers, include Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Piet Mondrian.
