17+ Things to do in Perth, Scotland in 2026 | Wayfaring Kiwi

Perth, Scotland is significant to Frankenstein because in the original novel by Mary Shelly, the main character Dr. Victor Frankenstein is imprisoned in Perth after being false accused of killing his best friend. Perth, Scotland is also significant to Frankenstein because Mary Shelly grew up in Scotland. She describes her main stay in Scotland as "on the blank and deary northern shores of the Tay, near Dundee". This overall gloomy and dark connotation of Scotland that Mary Shelly has is shown in the book where Victors life significantly goes downhill. He is falsely imprisoned in Perth after the creature kills his best friend and he is blamed for it. I found this information in a National Library Database. This source is an example of platforms as gatekeepers because the database chooses which articles they publish, you are not able to self publish on the website. Since not everyone is able to get their work visible on the site if they wanted to, the platform is able to gatekeep information that they do not want on the website. Mapping this location on COVE adds a grass-roots layer to a story usually told top-down. By getting a glimpse into Mary Shelly and her influences prior to writing Frankenstein, it allows you to understand why she wrote certain parts of the book better. Since usually only the work itself is analyzed and not the personal reasons or influences that may have led the author to write the story in this way, it gives a more personal feel to Mary Shelly's story.
