This painting was done by Philipp Otto Runge, who was a German Romantic painter. "Rest on the Flight into Egypt", which depicts Jesus, Mary, and Joseph midway through their journey from Bethlehem to Egypt, resting, as the name suggests. This painting shows a moment of rest when the setting was in a high stress situation-- two parents fleeing their home in order to save their child, traveling to a new country. I first found this painting when researching Philipp Otto Runge, but he was not the first person to paint this scene, in fact he is near the end of a long line of painters that addressed this scene and topic, going back to the late 1300's, while Runge's painting is from the early 1800's. The focus of these paintings are often on Jesus and Mary, while Joseph and angels often accompany them. Another common feature in these types of paintings was including a landscape in the background. Within the Bible there is only one mention of this journey to Egypt, and it is just given as a short passage, but yet this inspired many images.
Phillipp Otto Runge was born in 1777, on July 23rd, in Wolgast, Germany; though apart of Swedish rule at the time of his birth. He died very young, at the age of 33 in the year 1810, but even in this short time he managed to make his mark as an artist, and is regarded as one of the best German painters during the romantic era. He was known for his portraits, though had a wide variety of paintings. He was also known for his concept of the "color sphere", which was a means to order and show different shades of colors. It reminds me of a color wheel, though many of his often appeared as 3D.
