Robert Browning (1812-1889) and Lucrezia de'Medici

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

Picture of Robert Browning. Robert Browing was a famous writer and poet of the Romantic period. He was the author of My Last Duchess. The poem created controversies due to its possible connection with Alfonso II d'Este, the Fifth Duke of Ferrara. In the poem, the Duke seems to confess killing his last wife.

Painting of Lucrezia de'Medici by Agnolo Bronzino. Many believe that Lucrezia de'Medici is the Duchess Browning refers to in the poem My Last Duchess. Lucrezia was only fourteen years old when she married Alfonso II d'Este. She died later supposedly poisoned.
