The place: Universal Studios Hollywood is significant to my adaptation of the 1931 movie Frankenstein because Bela Lugosi did a screen test there for the role of the Monster before Boris Karloff was chosen for the part. I found this information from The American Society of Cinematographers’ article “Jack Pierce Forgotten Make-up Genius,” which talks about Lugosi’s screen test and his connection to the role. The participatory culture move is low barriers to entry because information like this can be shared by anyone who is interested in old movies and film history, not just actual historians. So, mapping this location on COVE adds a grassroots layer to a story usually told top-down because it shows an important behind the scenes part of how Frankenstein was made.
