White Lotus

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

,

White Lotus can be seen as an example of Gothic representation in modern media. It deals with topics of isoaltion, generational wealth, mystery, stolen items, unease, and suspense. The first season of White Lotus takes place on a remote all-inclusive resort in Hawaii. From the beginning of the season, there is an eerie feeling of suspense as there is scene foreshadowing the death of a person from the resort. The character who is featured is wearing sunglasses and concealing his identity. Each family or resort guest has their own story and plotline, which intertwine with the other guests at differnt moments. Many characters face anxities, health problems, family and relationship issues, and fear of the unknown. One couple in particular embodies the typical relationship dynamic that is often seen in Victorian Gothic. The newly wed couple grapples with how their life will play out after their honeymoon. The husband, who comes from wealth and has a good, well-paying job continually urges his wife to quit her job and stay at home. He minimizes her job's importance and work ethic. Without a job the wife realizes that she will be helpless and dependent on her husband, sort of trapped. This causes many anxities and regrets for her. There are other examples of Victorian Gothic such as excess and unchecked ambitions that are seen throughout this show.
