This song is a retelling of the classic novel by Emily Bronte. Throughout all of the lyrics, there are direct callbacks to the novels: “I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering / Wuthering Heights” and “Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy / I've come home, I'm so cold / Let me in your window”. While it is easy to connect this song to the Gothic based solely on the fact that it is a retelling, it does also keep many of the themes that are part of the Gothic genre as a whole. The most prominent are the landscape. Many of the lyrics are very visual, tying the singer to the misty moors of England. Their sound too is quite haunting, similar to the ghostliness that is very common in the Gothic genre. Besides just the atmospheric aspect of the song, the reversal of the narratives in comparison to that of the original novel reminds me, in a way, of the many manuscripts that were present in the earlier Gothic novels.
