Married Womens Property Act of 1870

The Married Women's Property Act of 1870 introduced great changes in the law of England. What this did was allow married women to hold property and liabilities independently without their husbands. It is important to note that this was only relevant to women married after 1870. The existence of a woman was essentially suspended when not with a man. This act made it possible for a woman to exist and have more power over herself. Among some scholars, there are conflicting opinions as to…

Packing a Punch, the Popular Periodical Beginning in 1841

In the 17th century, the Italian puppeteer Pollicinella arrived in England and brought with him his puppet shows, which were to be one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the coming centuries in Britain. These puppet acts evolved into what we now know as the puppet show Punch and Judy featuring a mad couple staging a show filled with ludicrous and nonsensical antics. Punch and Judy held captive audiences for time to come, Punch and Judy shows were familiar sights on…

The Sister Relationship in "Goblin Market"

Christina Rossetti, author of "Goblin Market", conveys a strong sister relationship between Laura and Lizzie. Lizzie seems to be characterized as the older sister based on her cautious nature, and how she ultimately saves Laura from death by making a large sacrifice. Laura is characterized as the younger sister because she is curious and falls to temptation very easily. Rossetti also has a sister relationship of her own with Maria Rossetti. M. Rossetti, born 1827, is the…

The Allusion of Christianity in "Goblin Market"

Christina Rossetti includes an allusion of Christianity within her poem, "Goblin Market". This is evident based on the premise of the poem. Laura falls to temptation and then Lizzie redeems her by making a sacrifice. Laura can be paralled to Eve, in the Garden of Eden, in the book of Genesis. In Genesis 3:1-6, the serpent manipulates Eve into eating some of the fruit from the tree which God said not to eat from, but Eve "saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to…

Christina Rosetti's Title Page illustration of "Goblin Market and Other Poems"

This illustration is the title page of Christina Rossetti’s “Goblin Market and other Poems,” second edition, which was created by none other than her brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In this second edition's title page illustration, he corrected one of the jawlines of the sleeping sister to appear more feminine.

Dante Rossetti played a crucial role in the production of her publication, "Goblin Market and Other Poems." As a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelites, he had a…

Rubáiyat of Omar Kháyyám: The Astronomer-Poet of Persia (1888); Lady Lucy's Lover; Amanda Younglund

Gifted to the “Fair Lady Lucy” by an anonymous “Lover,” Oregon State University’s 1888 edition of Houghton, Mifflin, & Co.’s Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám: The Astronomer-Poet of Persia offers an interesting look into Victorian courting customs. While this edition first appears as a rather drab gift compared to other, more lavish versions of the coveted rubáiyát, it follows the expectations typical of Victorian gentlemen- to give an expensive gift would be seen as an attempt of bribing their…

Orientialism, Illustrations, and Gift Books in the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám: History’s Most Luxurious and Popular Poetry Book

This exhibit examines the 1916 edition of Edward FitzGerald’s translation of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám published by Dodge Publishing Company. The edition also features illustrations done by artist and photographer, Adelaide Hanscom Leeson.

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam; Illustrated by Willy Pogany (1909) - Meganne Patterson

The Rubaiyat as a poem is layered, intense, and occasionally decieving in regards to its meaning. Without knowledge of several different aspects of the particular edition's history, illustrator, and date of publication, we can build a much broader sense of what the edition means in its location in history and our hearts.

Orientalism and Authenticity: The 1947 Random House Edition of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám

This term project examines the 1947 Random House edition of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. It explains the basic features of the edition, describes the people and organizations that went into the making of this edition, discusses how it plays into or subverts the Orientalism often common with the Rubáiyát, does a close reading of the relationship between one stanza and its neighboring illustration, and finally writes a speculative letter to the owner of the book based on the archival…

#83 in the Dr. Sigurd H. Peterson Memorial Collection at Oregon State is two items: A 1920 copyright songbook for a quartet rendition of In a Persian Garden, and a programme for the performance of In a Persian Garden from 1905. What do these pieces add to a collection of mostly illustrated gift books? Why are these two items together, and how did they end up here?

Complications with the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám

By taking a close look at an archived gift book of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, I have analyzed how the status and the history of the Rubáiyát as a gift book creates problems in larger conversations such as Orientalism and the ideology it represents. I have done research to better understand this 1929 edition of the Rubáiyát in how it was made, how it contributes to Orientalism, a close reading of the text and an illustration to uncover how unrealistic the…
