Canterbury is a cathedral city in Kent, England. It lies on the River Stour. Canterbury Cathedral is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is the primate of the Church of England. It became a popular destination for pilgrims following the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in the cathedral in 1170 at the hands of Henry II’s knights. The pilgrimage offered the framework for Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Today, the city is a popular tourist destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
