St. Stephen's Chapel

St. Stephen’s Chapel was located in the Palace of Westminster and was the chamber for the House of Commons from 1547 to 1834. It was almost entirely destroyed in a fire in 1834. The crypt below the chapel (the chapel of St. Mary of Undercroft) was badly damaged but survived, and it was eventually restored and used again as a place of worship. Members of Parliament may use it for christenings, and children of peers may be married here. Margaret Thatcher’s body was kept in the crypt the night before her funeral.
