20 years of Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus | The Republic

Engu, Nigeria is where Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie grew up before she became one of the most influential modern voices in British literature. I chose this location because while much of her writing is focused on difficult topics and realities she is able to blend moments of human connection and positive interactions throughout her stories. Seeing and knowing that she spent her childhood growing up in this city makes it clear to see where her perspective comes from as a writer. Engu is shaped by storytelling, community, and resilience which are qualities that constantly appear in her work. I chose to map this location to show how modern writers turn personal history and interactions into something meaningful.
