"The Cherokee Nation is a sovereign tribal government. Upon settling in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) after the Indian Removal Act, the Cherokee people established a new government in what is now the city of Tahlequah, Oklahoma. A constitution was adopted on September 6, 1839, 68 years prior to Oklahoma’s statehood." - https://www.cherokee.org/

"I am of the Cherokee tribe in Oklahoma. I grew up near the Sugar Mountain dance grounds. This oem is for my community at Tailholt. I was sometimes raised by the traditional women when my mother was ill, as she often was. My father took me to Green Corn dances , and I learned to dance to tortoise shells laced to female legs and sacred chants." - Catron Grieves
