Display Explanation:
The name for my exhibit will be Equality. In this instillation these painting will be put in a very large and colorful room. Because these painting are about feminism, women sexuality and possibly lesbianism, there will be equality flags and colors from the LGBTQIA+. Pablo Picasso’s painting, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon is 8 ft tall and 8 ft wide, the painting will be kind of leaned against the wall, very casually just like how the women in the painting are posing. Gustav Klimt’s painting, Die Freundinnen, or The Girlfriends in English is a little over 3 ft tall and 3 ft wide. I will have this one in the center of room because the term “girlfriends” could mean two different things. One meaning could be a significant other and the second could be two girls that are friends. I will have it in the center of the room because the other two painting, one is about women expressing their sexuality and confidence and the other is about homosexuality, especially lesbianism. My third painting, In Bed, The Kiss by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is a little over 2 ft tall and a little less than 2 ft wide. This painting will be normally hung against the wall but there is nothing “normal” about it. When most people think of normal relationships, it’s typically a man and a woman, not two men or two women, etc. The painting has toned down colors, but all the focus is on the two women kissing in bed, possibly naked. The walls of the room will have quotes from feminists and member and supporters from the LGBTQIA+ particularly celebrities. Some quotes include “I raise up my voice-not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard… We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.” -Malala Yousafzai, and “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made… It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.”-Ruth Bader Ginsburg. There will also be a sort of jumbotron, nothing massive but of celebrities saying inspiring quotes about feminisms and the LGBTQIA+ because having celebrities fight for something, it gets the message across much better.
Installation note:
The painting by Gustav Klimt, Die Freundinnen is an extremely colorful painting. Clearly one of the women is naked, but she is not being sexualized as one typically is. Women are extremely sexualized, especially women who are bisexual or lesbian because men find it attractive the women are attracted to other women. The painting is extremely colorful, so Klimt wanted people to really look at this painting, there is many different kinds of birds and flowers in the background. The two women are kind of intertwined with one another, so it is possible but no for sure that they are girlfriends or partners. In Bed, The Kiss by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is much clearer on the sexuality of the two women. The two women in the painting are “working women” or prostitutes and they are living in a brothel and brothels typically don’t have enough beds, so women had to share with one another. The women look have a deep connection and seem to not care about any judgments from society about their sexuality. Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Pablo Picasso is very different than the two other paintings. The women in the painting are prostitutes, just like in Toulouse-Lautrec’s painting but these women are straight. The women are posing naked and are very confident and comfortable doing so. It is said that the triangle at the bottom of the painting is a man’s appendage. So, these women are posing for a man who is not really in the painting but during the time many payments especially for prostitutes was fruit and there is fruit on top of the triangle so the women are possibly posing in front of the man for him to choose one of them so they can have the fruit. All these paintings represent some sort of equality and how people should not judge anyone for who they love or how they choose to live their lives.
