Welcome to Global Victorians, a third-year module at the University of Manchester. This module aims to open up nineteenth-century literature to a global perspective. We will study canonical Victorian writers like Wilkie Collins, Alfred Tennyson, and Christina Rossetti alongside writers writing from other places in the British Empire (including India, Australia and Canada). By the end of the module, you will have developed your research skills by learning to search through digital archives to uncover exciting new voices which have been left out of the university canon. You will be able to use your understanding of Victorian literature to engage with contemporary portrayals of empire and race in British museums. You will also have the opportunity to forge connections with students at Hong Kong University studying a similar module through collaborative tasks, opening up understanding of Victorian culture and its ongoing relevance to a global perspective. The module will include a mixture of prose fiction, poetry and non-literary material (e.g. maps, newspaper articles, government debates).
