Bluefield, WV marks a change in my life because it is where I was staying, with my ex fiancé, when I realized I did not love him. It’s his hometown, and a beautiful place, but the longer I spent there with him the week that I visited, the more that I realized I would never want a life with him and that I had much bigger dreams and expectations than what he could even try to support me in or be part of.
If someone else were researching Bluefield, I would guide them toward the official government website of Bluefield WV, https://www.bluefieldwv.gov/. It provides a lot of local information and resources, as well as even job opportunities.
Ironically, while I do not love him, will hopefully never speak to him again or see his face, and have far surpassed the low standards I was setting for myself while with him, I would love to revisit Bluefield. I have a lot of family from West Virginia, and the mountains connect deeply with my soul. Honestly, the biggest factor Bluefield had in my decision to leave him was that I found far too much beauty in the place itself and the environment, while the person I was there visiting was barren of humanity and soul to me. It shocked me to my core how someone so boring and so exhausting could come from somewhere so beautiful. The decision to break off the engagement was one of the best ones I’ve ever made.
Mapping this place, to me, reveals what someone’s origins can tell you about them. I’ve lived in an unfortunately-tourist-catered beach town for my entire life, and my enjoyment of the beautiful small town in the mountains was dampened by my fiancé’s terrible and drab personality — a place that I cannot even imagine fostering the person he was. It told me right then and there that he was not a product of his environment, but a product of his choices — and that would not change if he was to live with me for the rest of his life.
