Jane Eyre is structured almost like an autobiography, and the novel moves through a series of houses (Gateshead, Lowood, Thornfield, and beyond), each one marking a different chapter of Jane's life. Before we study how Bronte uses place to mark those chapters, try it yourself: pick one real place, a school, a hometown, a place you moved to or from, and treat it the way Bronte treats her settings.
