Hathersage marks a change in my life, as when I first visited here several years ago while researching a scholarly article, I had no idea this area was so beautiful and the village so quaintly British (image above). I'd point someone researching this place to the Hathersage Parish Council's own village history page, which lays out the local sites and history, highlighting special features like the Stanage Edge (image below). This location shows a change in surroundings because I arrived expecting a plain, grim English village to match the novel's Gothic reputation, and found instead a genuinely picturesque one, quiet stone houses, green hills, nothing like the bleak Thornfield I'd pictured. Mapping Hathersage reveals where a place like this actually sits in England, tucked into Derbyshire, well outside of London (which is really all most Americans, including me before that trip, tend to know about the country).
