Hathersage marks a change in my life because I visited several years ago while researching a scholarly article, and I had no idea this area was so beautiful until I got there. I'd point someone researching this place to the Hathersage Parish Council's own village history page, which lays out the local sites and history far better than I could summarize secondhand. This location shows a change in surroundings because I arrived expecting a plain, grim English village to match the novel's Gothic reputation, and found instead a genuinely picturesque one, quiet stone houses, green hills, nothing like the bleak Thornfield I'd pictured. Mapping Hathersage reveals where a place like this actually sits in England, tucked into Derbyshire, well outside London, which is really all most Americans, including me before that trip, tend to know of the country.
