Italians First Began Immigrating

Although immigration of Italians to the US can be traced back centuries, it wasn't until the 1880s that Italians started coming in mass due to poor conditions and lack of opportunity in their native country/regions.

The March 14, 1891 New Orleans Lynchings

11 Italian Americans were lynched by an angry mob after a court case for the murder of police chief David Hennessy found 9 of the Italian men charged with murder were found to be innocent. This is the largest public lynching in American history.

Ellis Island is Opened

Ellis Island was utilized by the US as an immigration station. It was later turned into a National Park in 1965 and became an immigrant focused museum in 1990.

Pietro di Donato's novel Christ in Concrete was published

This novel details the life and death of a brick layer named Geremio. After his death, Geremio's son Paul works as a brick layer to support his family and details the struggles of the Italian American experience.

John Fante's Dago Red was Published

John Fante's book of short stories Dago Red (later republished as The Wine of Youth) detailing the life, struggles, and views of Italian Americans of the time. Includes the short story he is famous for: "The Odyssey of a WOP"
