- British Library Description:
Christina Rossetti's long narrative poem 'Goblin Market', originally illustrated by her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti, has been reinterpreted by artists into the 20th century. Shown here are Arthur Rackham's series of illustrations from 1933. Rackham's goblin creatures are animal-like but their appearance also borrows from the mythical creatures found in traditional fairytale and folklore; in the third illustration, Rackham seems to be responding to the popular reading of the poem as a tale of the loss of sexual innocence.
