There were three major types of gasses used during WW1: Lachrymator, Sternutator, and Suffocating gasses. This picture shows   chlorine gas, a type of sternutator gas, being lit by German soldiers during the Second Battle of Ypres. Wilfred Owen wrote about a gas being used against them during the war, and gave readers a glimpse of the effects the gas had on soldiers.

although gas masks were used as a way of protection fro m these poisonous substances, they could not detai n all of them. suffocating gases like mustard gas was unable to keep soldiers from asphyxiation, for it was known to penetrate all clothing and persistantly scattered throughout the body. 

In World War I, they used wagons pulled by horses in. order to attempt to retrieve the deseased from the battle field. along with the deaths of many men, histories beleiev over 8 million horses died during those 4 years of war. this image only shows a small part of how gruesome these carriages were. 

even today, amny soldiers are faced with some type of PTSD, but for those in WWI is the start of a life changin, and sometimes life endinng event. soldier would alot of times suffer from nightmares of what they had experinced in their time on the battle field. a most common experinece they went through was shell shock. by the end of this war, there were over 80,000 cases of this "disease."
