Newgate Prison

Originally housed in Newgate, on the historic gates of London, the second Newgate Prison was located on the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey inside the City of London. It was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666 and rebuilt by Christopher Wren in 1672. It was eventually demolished in 1904. Newgate Prison was notorious for poor conditions and cruel treatment. Notable people once imprisoned at Newgate include Daniel Defoe (for pamphleteering and political activities), Ben Johnson (for killing a man in a duel), William Kidd (better known as the pirate Captain Kidd), Sir Thomas Malory, and William Penn (held in contempt of court for not removing his hat).
