"Mi’kmaq, also spelled Micmac, the largest of the North American Indian tribes traditionally occupying what are now Canada’s eastern Maritime Provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island) and parts of the present U.S. states of Maine and Massachusetts. Because their Algonquian dialect differed greatly from that of their neighbours, it is thought that the Mi’kmaq settled the area later than other tribes in the region."- https://www.britannica.com/topic/Mikmaq

"I was born in Whycocomagh, Nova Scotia, in 1931 as a status Indian of Micmac tribe because I was a foster kid who had been shunted from home to home and one reservation to another. I have a deep and abiding love for children. With eight of my own, I have nonetheless adopted two more and take care of two grandchildren. I write always with children in mind. I write so that others may come to understand the right of my people to education and dignity... I am sixty-one years old with Parkinson's disease, but that doesn't stop me from creating. I am working to better the image of my people." - Rita Joe
