We Are Making a New World

This picture is included in this gallery because of the incredible use of depth and detail. While it may look simple on the surface, this photo was created by a WWI veteran named Paul Nash to show the empty landscape and present the feeling of loneliness and isolation that war creates. I also believe the tall trees and rolling hills show the unsettling peace that comes after the war--seeing that there are no soldiers in this photo.

Study of a Peat Bog

This photo is included in this gallery to show what a peat bog actually looks like. I find this photo fascinating due to its serenity and calming effect. While these environmental phenomenons are known to preserve bodies, I find this photo very beautiful and natural. I also do not think this is what comes to mind when looking at the Grauballe Man and wondering where he came from.

Big Fish: Daffodil Scene

While this is not an exact piece of art, this film Big Fish (2003) has always been one of my favorite movies and when I think about he poem, "I Wandered Lonley as a Cloud," by Wordsworth, this particular scene in this film always fills me with such a happy feeling. I believe there is just something intrinsically gratifying about daffodils that brings peace and serenity.

The Chillon Castle

This painting was done by the artist Gustave Courbet at Lake Geneva in Switzerland. I feel like this painting is very popular, and if you haven't seen the painting before, I'm sure the photo that looks almost identical to this has appeared on your HP desktop background photo. I think this photo is so beautiful and is delightfully embedded in nature.

Painting Inspired by the Industrial Revolution

I'm unsure of the year but this painting was done by Anibal Anganuzzi. It reminds me of the Industrial Revolution because of the way that we see the people in this photo becoming machines. This reflects the ideologies that we see in the poem, "The Song of the Shirt," were there is a loss of nature and preservation of the self, and an emergence of pollution and death (which reminds me of the red and black in these photos).

The Albatross

I am pretty sure this photo was drawn by Gustave Dore. I think this is one of the best looking photos of the scene where the albatross is killed and it not only shows the beautiful oceanic scene, but also the symbolism and tension in this scene. I think it is fascinating that he decided to draw it right before the albatross is killed which slows down this scene and leaves the audience to reflect on all of the elements that are included in this part.
