The meaning of the word Somme is tranquility, however the history of this battleground is anything but. Reveared as the one the deadliest first day's of battle in history. This is an areal space image from Nasa showcasing the exisiting geographical damage, for example Locknager Crater. Per Nasa, " The crater is the result of explosives packed into a long tunnel in the ground, detonated on July 1, 1916, by British forces. The explosion produced a crater that measured 100 meters wide and 21 meters deep."

With over a million total deaths, it is one of the bloodiest battles in human history.
