The St. James Theatre in London is where Oscar Wilde's The Importance of being Earnest premiered in 1895. This theatre once was in the middle of London's west end and was surrounded by the constant movement of the city. Sadly the building was demolished in the 1950s however, it still felt important for me to map because this was always a place where people could come together and escape into a new world for a moment. This theatre wasn't new to hosting plays that were outside of the box either. St. James had a reputation for taking huge risks and bringing new ideas and fresh takes to the stage, which made it the perfect location for Wilde's playwriting. It's so fun to look at the photo I attached and think about the excitement that surrounded the building with crowds lining up to see something special. A quote that captures the idea of not allowing life's burdens to get your down is from Wilde himself; it reads: "Pleasure is the only thing one should live for."
