Wellington Shropshire is significant to Jane Eyre because Charlotte Bronte's father Patrick Bronte served as an assistant curate at All Saints Church in Wellington in 1809. He worked under Reverend John Eyton before he moved to Yorkshire, which is where the Bronte family became closely connected to the area that inspired Charlotte Bronte's writing. I found this information through the Wellington community history project, which document local connects to Patrick Bronte. This is an example of participatory culture because a local community has researched and shared it own history rather than leaving the story to publishers or historians. One source explains that Wellington "almost certainly helped put the family there in the first place." Mapping Wellington on Cove adds a background to Jane Eyre through Charlotte Bronte. It makes a not so well known place connected to the Bronte family visible and allows my classmates and I better understand this history of Jane Eyre.
