Mary Wollstonecraft published a children's book titled Original Stories from Real Life in 1791 (British Library). The frontispiece of Original Stories... was engraved by none other than William Blake whose work we have also read this semester. Aside from the obvious interest in the collaboration between the authors, the artwork itself contains themes that are reminiscent of Romantic conventions. The adult woman hovers her outstretched arms over the little girls signifying protection of their persons. Additionally, the girls literally look up to the woman conveying their adoration of her. One can then infer that protection of children and the responsibility of women to become good mentors for girls was important to Wollstonecraft, and this concern for such oppressed people is a common theme amongst the Romantics.
