In examining a lineage of events throughout time, this timeline endeavors to call consideration to the role of literature, history, and culture in informing and creating the climate from which the lives of Black mothers in the United States are consistently, disproportionately endangered by medical malpractice. Chosen for this timeline were literary and historical events that shed light on the creation and evolution of the systemic racism that informs these immoral medical practices: Equiano’s The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano (1789), Prince’s The History of Mary Prince (1831), Dr. James Marion Sims’s experiments (1845-1849), Browning’s “The Runaway Slave at Pilgrim’s Point (1848), Henrietta Lacks’ stolen cells (1951), and the forced sterilization of the...

A protest is a statement or action expressing one's disapproval of or objection toward something and women have been doing it throughout history. The 4B movement was first introduced in South Korea in 2019. The 4B movement is a social movement in which women in South Korea stay single to challenge the domestication of women. The 4 B’s represent different aspects of a woman’s life that demand change. As a result of this movement, South Korea has the lowest fertility rate at 0.7 as of 2023. This movement, however, is not one of the first, from the “Bachelor Girls” to The Night of Terror of 1917, the 4B movement is a wave that has been shaped by years of domestication and oppression. Women have been fighting for equality and the same opportunities as men throughout the world and have had several ups and downs throughout different periods. The protests for women’s rights have had several different points throughout history: equal stances in relationships, the right to their bodies...

The French Revolution saw the overthrow and execution of the previously reigning French Monarch. Both King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette would be brutally executed by guillotine in 1793. For the next twenty years, Europe would enter a series of large-scale military conflicts. These wars, often called the Coalition Wars, involved, at some point or another, almost all European nations and had a worldwide impact. They only ended when Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated at Waterloo in 1815. Provided here is a link with more information on the Coalition Wars and their effect.
