England (NC, Letter to WW)

England is perhaps the most famous, or infamous, of the area known as the United Kingdom. The English are commonly known as one of the largest colonizers in the world, having at one point occupied or invaded almost every single land mass on this world. England was also a prominent player in the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade, although slavery was never officially legalized in the country.

South Creek, Grand Turk Island

South Creek is a sheltered marine tidal system in the Turks and Caicos. It is a wetland that has caves, mangroves, channels, and shallow water. It is a small national park that protects birds and marine life in its mangroves. It is located in the southern region of Grand Turk, an island in the Turks and Caicos

"After the diving season was over, we were sent to the South Creek, with large bills, to cut up mangoes to burn lime with"

Spanish Point, Bermuda (The History of Mary Prince)

Spanish Point is a tiny area located near Pembroke Parish in Bermuda. For the first few centuries of this area's founding, it remained largely underdeveloped, and it wasn't until the 18th century that stone buildings were developed on Spanish Point. This area remained pretty stagnant until the early 1800s when development of the area finally became more prominent.

England

England, as mentioned in The Royal Exchange, is the center of the world for commerce. The Royal Exchange was published in 1711 at a time in which the British Empire was the world's superpower. One of the many traits of the world's largest empire is that it became the center for trade and commerce amongst all other nations. Addison makes note of a dispute between a Japanese man and a man from London, to prove that people from across the globe would travel to England to trade.

Portugal

Portugal is located on the Iberian Peninsula. It is the oldest continuously existing nation state on the Iberian Peninsula and one of the oldest in Europe. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal established the first global maritime and commercial empire becoming a large power of the time.

"The fruits of Portugal are corrected by the products of Barbadoes" (Addison Pa. 4).

Here, Addison is discussing the unity that the goods of countries are bringing to England. Without the goods of another country, the goods from one are not as good.

Montserrat (Excerpts from The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano...)

Historical Background

Montserrat is a British territory located in the Caribbean. Irishmen from nearby Saint Kitts settled the island in 1632. Shortly thereafter, they were followed by settlers from Virginia. And in 1661, the Island was captured and duly claimed by the English — their control was codified under the Treaty of Breda. The English used the island for a nefarious purpose: to transport Sub-Saharan African slaves.
