Billingsgate
Billingsgate is a ward in the City of London (London, England), located on the bank of the Thames between London Bridge and Tower Bridge. It was originally the City's water gate. In 1699, Billingsgate Fish Market was established at Billingsgate Wharf. In the 19th century, Billingsgate was the largest fish market in the world. It was redesigned several times before being moved to a building complex on the Isle of Dogs in Poplar in 1982.

Phase 1
London Considered as a Great World. (The Great World of London): "Again, as regards the metropolitan people, the polite Parisian is not more widely different from the barbarous Botecudo, than, is the lack-a-daisical dandy at Almack's from the Billingsgate "rough." Ethnologists have reduced the several varieties of mankind into five distinct types; but surely the judges who preside at the courts in Westminster are as morally distinct from the Jew "fences" of Petticoat Lane as the Caucasian from the Malayan race. Is not the "pet parson," too, of some West End Puseyite Chapel as ethically and physically different from the London prize-fighter, and he again from the CityAlderman, as is the Mongol from the Negro, or the Negro from the Red Indian."
Of the Street Sellers of Live Birds. (Volume 2): "The places where the street-sellers more especially offer their birds are—Smithfield, Clerkenwell-green, Lisson-grove, the City and New roads, Shepherdess-walk, Old Street-road, Shoreditch, Spitalfields, Whitechapel, Tower-hill, Ratcliffe-highway, Commercial-road East, Poplar, Billingsgate, Westminster Broadway, Covent-garden, Blackfriars-road, Bermondsey (mostly about Dock-head), and in the neighbourhood of the Borough Market."
