During the 20th century, the modernist art style was incorporated into art throughout Barcelona as previously mentioned. This new artistic style contrasted traditional art styles and was embraced by several different artists. When looking at the art pieces in this gallery, notice the vibrant colors and nonlinear lines that were a contrast to traditional art. This art style paralleled the Catalan desire to get rid of the old ways (being subjected to Spanish rule) and passionately fight for independence. This gallery will showcase art pieces by various artists that exemplify the modernist style and Catalan nationalism in their visual works.

“Large Vase” by Antoni Serra

This vase was created by Antoni Serra I Fiter in 1904. Serra was one of the top representatives of Modernisme Catalan art during this time. This piece was included as a decorative element in the interior of the Casa Lleo Morera, which was created by another Modernisme artist. The vase is finely crafted with white porcelain and incorporates Japanese style as well. This fusion of different artistic styles is a characteristic of Modernisme art and demonstrates how this artistic movement aimed to break the mold by incorporating multiple artistic styles into one art piece.

“The Palau de La Musica Catalana” by Lluis Domenech i Montaner

The cornerstone of the Palau de La Musica Catalana was laid on April 23, 1905, to honor the patron saint of Catalonia, St. George. This art piece by Domenech I Montaner features Catalan cultural elements while exemplifying the modernist style.
