Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth, often shorten to Yarmouth, is a coastal town in Norfolk, in the East of England. It has been seaside resorts in 1760 and was a major fishing port until the second half of the twentieth century.

Holyhead

Holyhead is a town on the Isle of Anglesey, in Wales, and a major Irish Sea port serving Ireland. Located on Holy Island, Holyhead was originally connected to Anglesey via the Four Mile Bridge and now by the Stanley Embankment.

Conwy

Conwy, traditionally known in English as Conway, is a medieval market town in North Wales, notable for its castle built between 1283 and 1289, on the instruction of Edward I of England during his conquest of Wales.

1839 Act on Custody of Infants

As mentioned on the timeline, the 1839 Act on Custody of Infants enabled mothers to petition for custody of their children up to the age of seven. Before this parliamentary act, fathers were always given custody of their children. This has interesting implications in relation to Charles Dickens Oliver Twist, the last installment of which was published just three months before the bill was enacted. 

Isle of Portland

The Isle of Portland is a limestone tied island in the English Channel, forming the southernmost point of the county of Dorset, Southwest England. Chesil Beach, a barrier beach, joins it to the mainland.
