Originally housed in Newgate, on the historic gates of London, the second Newgate Prison was located on the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey inside the City of London.
Newgate was one of the historic gates in the London Wall around the City of London, giving access to the City from the west of the country. The gate was used as a prison from the twelfth century onwards. The gate was demolished in 1767.
