The United States is a nation in North America. Originally consisting of British colonies, the U.S. gained its independence in 1776 after The Revolutionary War. Today, it is a major player on the world stage politically, socially, and eceonomically.
Weymouth is a small city in Southern England that was founded in 1252 ("Weymouth History"). The city is located on Weymouth bay. Weymouth is most typically known for its beautiful beaches and its seafood ("Weymouth History"). People from all over the world travel to Weymouth to stay at the seaside resorts. Weymouth is seen in The Remains of Day because it is the city where Miss Keaton meets Stevens. The name of the city is mentioned in the book once and it is the title of chapter six, "Weymouth".
New York City, a port city in the state of New York, lies in the north eastern United States. The city is the largest metropolis in the United States. New York City is extremely influential in American culture as well as other cultures around the world. Furthermore, the city is extraordinarily diverse, with hundreds of ethnic neighborhoods across its five burrows. Home to theater, trade, fashion, sport, etc, NYC is regarded as one of the most ideal urban centers in the world. Historically, New York has been a hub for immigrants entering through Ellis Island.
The Ruhr Region is an area of western Germany that surrounds the Ruhr River, a tributary of the Rhine River. The area had much industrial activity in the early 20th century. The Ruhr Region helped Germany prepare for World War II. Claims of Ruhr industrialists helping Hitler rise to power have been made, though some sources (Britannica, in this instance) say these claims may have been exaggerated. Because of the Ruhr Region’s industrial activity, it was a key target for bombing by the Allied Forces. Roughly 75% of the area was destroyed by the bombing.
Southampton is a port city located in the county on Hampshire. Geographcially, it is located at the southern point of the British Isles. Becasue of it's geograpcial location, it has been an important center for international trade for centuries. Moreover, it has often been a focal point for wartime strategy. In World War 2, it was the central point of preperations for Operation Overload, more commonanly known as the Invasion of Europe. It was also heavily bombed throughout the entirity of the war.
Paris, France is the capital of France and has been one of the most influential cities in history due to its excellence in science, finance, fashion, diplomacy, and commerce. In The Remains of the Day, the diplomacy characteristic of Paris is highlighted. In the second chapter, Day Two Morning, Mr.
Kent is a county located in England near the southeast portion of Great Britain. It was originally a more rural county known for its farmlands, being named the "Garden of England". However, as the city of London expanded during the 1900s, it slowly crept into Kent and the county developed some more industrious features such as papermaking and engineering. In The Remains of the Day, Kent is featured during Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield's visit to Mr. Farraday at Darlington Hall, as they have lived in Kent for two decades.
Cornwall is a county in England located on a peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by mild weather and large amounts of rain weather, both a result of its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. While Cornwall contains many sea ports used for shipping resources, tourism accounts for a majority amount of the economy due to the natural beauty of the area.
Despite being one of the victorious allied powers in World War 1, Italy entered a period of economic crisis and social turmoil, leading to the rise of the Italian fascist dictatorship in 1922; thus leading to their collaboration with Nazi Germany in WW2. (wiki)
