Orlando Timeline - LIT 4050 Spring 2023
This timeline will show the span of time in this novel's six chapters narrative Orlando's very long life, beginning in the Elizabethan Age. The span of time that Virginia Woolf assigns to her protagonist Orlando's life is fundamental to her commentary on gender and genre.
Sussex, England
Sussex is a county that covers the southeastern part of England; south of London to be more exact (“Sussex”). Additionally, Sussex at this current time is divided into three administrative counties: East Sussex, West Sussex, as well as Brighton and Hove (“Sussex”). England did not always control Sussex, however; the Romans were the original inhabitants of this land (“Sussex”). Subsequently, a faction known as the South Saxons (of which the name of Sussex is derived) invaded the land and settled (“Sussex”).
The Wilton House
One of the major scenes within Sense and Sensibility is the ball scene in which Willoughby and the Dashwood sisters have their confrontation. In the adaptations of the novel, this scene is filmed at the historic Wilton House. The Wilton House is owned by the Earl and Countess of Pembroke, who are descendants of Sir William Herbert. During the regency period, this was a popular place for the wealthy and elite to gather during the Winter as it was known for its Debutant Balls.
