In Bleak House, Temple Bar is where the high Lord Chancellor sits “in his High Court of Chancery.” This is important to the story because, at the time, the Temple Bar was the ceremonial entrance to London, so the chancellor is gatekeeping London from the common people through self-importance and the Law in the passage. It shows that he thinks he and his own position are the most important in London.

Paternoster Row

Paternoster Row was a street in London famous for book publishing and selling. It was destroyed during WWII, and has since been rebuilt as Paternoster Square. In "The Romance of a Shop", this is where Gertrude visits to attempt selling her works.

Strange Victorians Map

The Victorian period was one of great change for Britain. Comprised of the years of Queen Victoria’s reign (1837-1901), it featured the rapid industrialization and urbanization of Britain, and the radical expansion of the British empire. Although these changes improved the quality of life for some Victorians, many more were forced to work under inhumane conditions, live in unsanitary and insalubrious environments, or suffered the violent oppressions of colonial rule.

Altab Ali Park

Altab Ali Park is located in London, England. It was originally known as St. Mary's Park as it was the site of a fourteenth century church called St. Mary Matfelon. Unfortunaltley, St. Mary Matfelon was heavily bombed during the Blitz of World War II and all that remains is the foundation and several graves. In 1998, the park was renamed in memory of Altab Ali. Ali was a twenty-five year old Bangladeshi worker who in 1978 was murdered near the park on his way home from work.

Belgrave Square

Belgrave Square is a garden square built in the 19th centruy. It is the centeral part of the Belgravia district, a very affluent district in London. It is politically important to both London and the world, as it is the home to several embassies. The Square also features gardens with famous statues of figures such as Simon Bolivar and Christopher Columbus.
