Cornhill is one of the traditional cities of London. It was part of the city’s “main major east-west thoroughfare that divided the northern half of London from the southern half” (Jenstad). It is believed that Scrooge’s fictional creditor business was in this part of London.
“In honour of its being Christmas Eve, and then ran home to Camden Town as hard as he could pelt” (Dickens). Camden Town is the location of the Cratchit family's home in Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol. Camden is a district of northwest London, which became an important location at the time of the novella for the development of railways (“Camden Town”). It is thought that 18 Bayham Street is the exact address of the Cratchit’s house in the story, as this was where Dicken's once lived.
This is the location of Ethel Dickens's first independent type-writing office in which she was the sole proprietor. She opened this office at the end of 1887, possibly as early as October and certainly by December. It was located above the offices of All the Year Round, the literary miscellany magazine started by her grandfather, Charles Dickens, and inherited by her father, Charles Dickens, Jr. (better known as Charley Dickens).
This map is a work-in-progress showing the locations at which Ethel Kate Dickens (b. 1864 - d. 1936) lived and worked. It is part of an ongoing biographical project to recover, understand, and appreciate the complexities of Ethel's many lives: the intellectual and interpretive labor of Dickens as a literary typist, her significance as a descendant of the author living in the spotlight of inherited celebrity status, and the nuances of her personal relationships -- particularly with her long-time "home-mate" Bertha Fanny Bradley.
