New Tutorial Arrangements (reposting Feb 5 Moodle announcement)

Dear all,

May I enlist your support for a new way of running the tutorial? After yesterday’s experience, I felt strongly that a clear focus and a common direction were needed for a productive, truly interactive tutorial.

The Garonne--a river in southwest France and northern Spain

The Garonne is a river in Gascony near the family chateau of Emily St. Aubert. I would recommend sunscreen and sunglasses. If you want to see the Garonne someday, you should book a Viking River Cruise (after the plague is over and after you've become rich/retired). Fun fact: there are efforts to save the endangered European sea sturgeon in the Garonne, but in 1584 there were probably lots of sturgeons still--by the early 19th century they were over using them to produce caviar.  

Travels with Emily

In this thread, start mapping Emily's travels in The Mysteries of Udolpho. Where does Emily go? Find a map. Mark the geography. What are some aspects of the landscape or the countries that Emily travels through? Are there any photographs? Fun facts? Would you recommend bringing suncreen and a bathing suit? Wellingtons or a pistol?

Appendix B: Contemporary Reviews

These reviews are initial reactions to the 1891 edition of Wilde’s collection of short stories, Lord Arthur Savile’s Crimes and Other Stories. The first five are British reviews from August and September of 1891, while the last is an American review published in February 1892.
