The fluctuating value of people and individuals - HM

In Great Britain, on the almost 250 years of history that we reviewed in this class, the value given to individual by society, government and individuals themselves have vary through time, as well as for other factors like sex, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, nationality, etc. This is actually reflected on many of the texts that we analyzed, either directly by addressing the topic or indirectly by looking at how characters interact with each other.

Highgate, London

Highgate, located in North London, was a notable area during the late 1700s. Highgate was known for its fine houses and wealthy residents. It attracted noblemen and rich merchants who built grand homes with splendid views over London. The name "Highgate" comes from the tollgate that was established at the highest point of the neighborhood. Highgate in the late 1700s was a blend of historical charm, affluent residences, and evolving urban development, making it a significant part of London's landscape. 

Frome, Somerset

 During the late 1700s, Frome was a thriving town in Somerset with a rich history. By the 18th century, Frome had grown rapidly and became one of the largest towns, with a population of over 8,000.  Frome had a large social scene, with various churches, chapels, and public institutions. The parish church underwent restoration in the mid-19th century, reflecting the town's commitment to preserving its historical heritage.
