Kent (Bleak House)

The county of Kent lies on the southeastern tip of Great Britian. It is bordered to the north by what is considered Greater London and to the south by the English Channel. Due to its location, in such close proximity to the European continent, it has has been subject to many invasions by the Romans, Jutes, Saxons, and Normans. Evidence of Romans architecture has been unearthed in modern day Canterbury, a town within Kent. In the 19th century, rapid industrialism led to the growth of London and the suberbs of London, increasingly encroaching on surrounding counties and towns.

Brackley is a market town in West Northamptonshire and a parish for the local government, close to Oxford. Johnson recalls in "Inglan is a Bitch" that "dem have a lickle factri up inna Brackly" (LIne 43). Johnson had worked in a factory there for 15 years until he was laid off, and implied that he had no worth in the company despite the 15 years of labor, not that he was paid well regardless. The song was released in 1980, and fifty years prior in 1930, Brackely had just demolished its Poor Law Union.
