Marylebone Church (Romance of a Shop)

In Romance of a Shop, this is where Francis gets married to Edward Marsh. The book says, “At the end of August, Fanny was quietly married at Marylebone Church” (Levy). Historically, it was an Anglican church on Marylebone Road in London. It was constructed between 1813-1817, and it was designed by Thomas Hardwick. A bomb fell on the church in the closing years of WW2, repairs were then made. 

St. George's Church (Romance of a Shop)

Contextually in Romance of a Shop,  St. George's Church is mentioned when Connie and Gertrude are discussing Connie’s habits of going out to dances and parties. Gertrude remarks that going out does not go well for her. On the other hand, Connie replies and says, " “Indeed it does [go well]. Often in St. George's, Hanover Square” (mentioned in Chapter 16). She is implying that dancing sometimes leads to marriage.

Cannes (Romance of a Shop)

Cannes, France is a city located on the French Riviera. It enjoyed a period of calm in the 18th century and flourished in the 19th century. At the end of the 19th century, several railways were completed in Cannes, which prompted the arrival of streetcars. Amy Levy mentions Cannes, France in her novel Romance of a Shop(1888) when Conny, one of the main characters, visits Cannes for a few months with her family.

South Kensington (Romance of a Shop)

In A Romance of a Shop, South Kensington is mentioned as a more desirable location for their business than the studio on Baker Street. After one of Gertrude and Conny’s searches for a potential location, they came back with an interest in a studio on Baker Street. However, the girls did not return without their criticisms, saying, “‘It certainly is the most likely place we have seen,’ said Gertrude, as she sipped her tea, and blinked at the fire with dazzled, short-sighted eyes.

Scarborough (Romance of a Shop)

In the novel Scarborough is a town that Getrude and Phyllis stayed with the Devonshires after their father’s passing. They remain with them while they look for a tenant to set up their photography business in. Scarborough is a seaside town near the North Sea coastline. It originated in the 10th century by the Vikings as a fishing settlement previously having been a Roman Signal station.
