St. Anthony's Well and Chapel, Edinburgh (Recollections)

St. Anthony's Well is a natural spring found in Edinburgh which has a peculiar shape and is thought to be a source of holy water. Its waters are said to have healing properties, being used as a method of alternative healing up into the late 19th century. The water of the spring used to flow from a rock, but this has dried up since the 1950's, though the well is still important to Mayday festivals, in which you are supposed to wash your face with the water and make a wish. Blackburn, England

Blackburn, England is an industrial town in Lancashire. Much of its economy for several centuries has been textile production and manufacturing. But, the textile industry started to decline in the early 20th century, and left many people in the area without work or finances.

Caribbean Sea

This will focus on the Caribbean Sea, mentioned in Jean Rhys's, "Voyage in the Dark". The Caribbean Sea is in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Western Hemisphere. It has borders of Mexico, Cuba, South America, and Central America. During the 1930s, there were labour rebellions in the British Caribbean region colonies(Voyage in the Dark was published in 1934). Today, the Carribean Sea is known for the second largest barrier reef in the world, beautiful waters, oil, fishing, and is a hotspot for tourism.

Huddersfield, England (Voyage)

Hudderfield, England is a market town and one of the largest cities is West Yorkshire, England. The rivers Holme, Colne, and Calder flow through the town. The rivers around the town provided soft water required for textile treatment in large weaving sheds, this made it a prominent mill town with an economic boom in the early part of the Victorian era Industrial Revolution.

Spanish Town, Jamaica

Spanish Town is a small city located in southeast Jamacia. This small city is known for its historical buildings, and one of the most famous is St. Catherine's Cathedral. This small city was once busy and full of life, but now it is known for producing Ligyanea Plain. Spanish Town is first mentioned in an excerpt from "Wide Sagrasso Sea" when the narrator says, " When I asked her why so few people came to see us, she told me that the road from Spanish Town to Coulibri Estate where we lived was very bad".

Inchtavanach Island

Inchtavanach is one of the larger islands in Loch Lomond. It was once the site of a monastery, giving rise to its translated name "Monk's Isle." The island is steep and lofty, and mostly covered with natural oak. It has a history that dates back to the spread of Celtic Christianity in Scotland during the Dark Ages after the Romans left Britain. In Recollections of a Tour Made in Scotland , A.D. 1803, Dorothy Wordsworth mentions Inchtavanach Island when she says, "The islands, as we look down the water, are seen in great beauty.

Southport, England

Southport is a town located on the water just outside of Liverpool. It is a popular seaside resort and the town hosts several events throughout the year. The town is famous for its golfing traditions and flower shows. 

The town was founded in 1792 when a man built a bathhouse on the beach, and later, a hotel. By the early 1800s, a settlement had formed around the hotel.

Oldham, England (Voyage)

Oldham is an English town located in Greater Manchester. During the Industrial Revolution, Oldham became an important center for the textile industry. More recently, the textile industry there has declined, and there are more efforts to culturally progress the town beyond its textile industry past. Oldham is mentioned once in Voyage in the Dark, when the speaker lists a number of towns that she has visited: "I started counting all the towns I had been to...Wigan, Blackburn, Bury, Oldham, Leeds" (Part III, Chapter 2).
