Jefferson Park, Orlando, Florida, USA - "Paper Towns" by John Green

This is the hometown and the main setting in the novel. The main character and his love interest reside in Jefferson Park (along with everyone else in the novel). It's described as a "massive subdivision, because that's what Florida does with land" (Prologue 2). It is not a remarkable town and this is important because it's the reason why Margo (the main character's love interest) decides to leave in the first place.

Lodz, Poland- "If I Should Die Before I Wake"

This is the place where Chana is originally from. To protect herself from the Nazis and prison gaurds, she must lie about her place of origin. When asked, "You are Chana Shayevitsh, are you not? A Jew from Lodz, Poland?", she lies. Lodz is the third largest city of Poland. Just before the war, Lodz made up the second largest Jewish community in Poland. Nazis occupied this city just one week after Germany invaded Poland. Although this novel is fictional, it very accurately portrays how a victim would have to lie when asked where he or she was from.

Venice, Italy - Candide

Candide has returned from South America and traveled through Paris. In Venice, he meets six strangers who are kings, yet they have been stripped of their titles due to the wars taking place. In comparison, Cnadide is able to give more money than them (though he is a citizen) and it has not brought him happiness. He also reunites with Cacambo and is still in search of Cunegonde.

Constantinople, Turkey - Candide

This is the final location of the novel and becomes Candide's home. It is nothing like Westphalia, bit Candide has Cunegonde, Pangloss, and several characters from his travels living with him. He has everything he wanted, but he is not happy. To distract themselves from idleness they decide "cultivating their garden" (i.e. working) is the best remedy.

El Dorado (Peru) - Candide

At this point, Candide has lost Cunegonde again (but she is alive) and killed her brother in Paraguay. As he flees with his servant Cacambo they end up in El Dorado (they say it is in Peru). This is an important location in realation to Pangloss' philosphy. Though everything is for the best, he says, "I own, my friend, once more that the castle where I was born is nothing in comparison with this: but after all, Miss Cunegonde is not here..." There is a shift in how the rest of the events play out; they are all in pursuit of his beloved.

Lisbon, Portugal - Candide

This location is the next place where important events take place, historical and plot-based. Candide has reunited with his dear professor and they end up in Portugal due to a ship wreck. Historically, the Spanish Inquistion is in progress. Pangloss, as a philospher, blasphemes by disregarding the idea of Original Sin. As a consequence Pangloss is hung and Candide is whipped. This incident shows the brutality of the movement. After this, he reunites with Cunegonde, who was thought dead. Is all for the best?

Westphalia, Germany - Candide

In Candide by Voltaire, Candide's first home was in his uncle, the Baron's castle. This "Magnificent Castle" is in Westphalia. Throughout the novel, this is the only home that Candide knows (until the end) and compares other locations to this ideal. This is the location in which the story's events begin. Cunegonde, Candide's beloved, makes advances and when they are caught he is thrown out. His love for her, which is tied to their childhood home, is probably why he thinks of Westphalia as the ideal.
