A Friend's Last Words

George Weslow

Buried in Arlington, deep in the ground,
The grave of another young soldier is found...
In Vietnam he met his death,
But he spoke to me with his dying breath...
He said Wes, please don't worry about me,
I'm going to Heaven don't you see!...
Promise me that you won't cry,
Someday I'll meet you buddy, up in the sky...
We'll get together sometime again,
But only the good Lord knows just when...
I'm going to Heaven this I know,
Because that's where all the old soldiers go...
God is waiting in Heaven for me,
And Heaven is where I long to be...
Where the beer is flowing and everything's free,
To all good soldiers like you and me...
I'll be with the rest of the soldiers in the sky,
And you'll get there too, by and by...
So don't feel too bad when I'm gone,
Because what I did will live on and on...
Other soldiers will pass away,
But they'll be remembered from day to day...
Just do your best and freedom will reign,
For there's more young soldiers from where I came.
